Every industry has set up an award system. It’s not just Hollywood and the music business that wants to be recognized for stellar performances. Business people, investors, managers and just about everyone else that performs a job wants recognition and awards make that happen. People don’t hear much about the hedge fund industry. Most of the conversation about hedge funds is centered around profits earned and how much hedge fund manager make each year. But the industry runs deeper than that. Men like Jim Dondero can and will tell stories about hedge funds that show another side of hedge funds and what they really accomplish.
Jim Dondero is one of the co-founders of Highland Capital Management. Highland Capital Management is a very successful investment firm that has several successful hedge funds. One of those funds recently won the 2015 HFM US Hedge Fund Performance Award. Dondero says his company’s Global Head of Highland Alternative Investors, Michael Gregory, added this award to the 2014 Lipper Award for Floating Rate Opportunities and the Morningstar’s five-star designation for Global Allocation. Jim credits Gregory’s team for the outstanding performance of the Highland Long/Short Healthcare Fund. The Highland Long/Short Healthcare Fund is Highland Capital’s largest hedge fund with more than $3 billion in assets under management.
Dondero and his team get very excited when the company receives an award. It shows the hard work and dedication that has been infused in the company. For the last 22 years, Jim Dondero and partner Mark Okada have cut a path for Highland Capital and it has paid off. At last count, Highland Capital has more than $22 billion in assets under management. That’s impressive and very award worthy according to Global Head, Michael Gregory. But Gregory thinks Dondero is the main reason for the company’s success.
Jim Dondero’s resume is impressive. Dondero started his career in 1984 as a Morgan investment analyst right after he graduated from the University of Virginia and McIntire School of Commerce. Jim is currently the chairman of CCS Medical, Nexbank, and Cornerstone Healthcare. He also sits on the board of MGM Studios and American Banknote. Jim is also a Chartered Financial Analyst and Certified Management Accountant.
But Dondero says all the credit for the success of Highland Capital Management goes to the employees that work all over the world. Dallas-based Highland Capital invests in markets around the globe and without good people those investments would not perform the way they do, according to Dondero.
